Ted Owens Born 1-16-1935 Educated in Waynesboro Public Schools Entered school music program as a clarinetist. Became a saxophonist during 4th grade for jazz purposes and professional playing Joined ‘The Melodiers Orch.” Led by Joe Gluse, while in 4th grade. Performed with high school marching and concert bands, “Little Giant” jazz ensemble, “The Dixieland Six (clarinet) and the male chorus. After high school Ted attended Concord College and played with the Concord Commanders. Left school to join Air Force played briefly with “The Virginians, a Harrisonburg band before entering USAF. Returned from the USAF in 1957 and resumed playing with “The Melodiers”. Worked with “The Harry Bryan Quartet”,a Harrisonburg group. Helped form and directed “The Townsmen”, a short-lived 16 piece band in Charlottesville. On a “one nighter” basis, played with various Traveling bands, such as “The Harry James Orch.” Ted Continues to play with groups throughout Virginia. Ted is married, having recently celebrated 49 yrs. With his wife, Janet, and continues to reside in the Waynesboro area. |
